Safe Structured-Data Conversion Workflow
Minimise, sample, convert, compare and document structured data without losing the original.
A safe conversion workflow protects meaning, confidentiality and the ability to correct mistakes.
Minimise first
Create an export containing only the rows and columns needed for the document. Remove personal, contractual and credential data rather than relying solely on later redaction.
Keep an untouched source
Work on a copy and retain the original in its approved location. Do not make a browser textarea the only surviving copy of important information.
Use a diagnostic sample
Test empty, malformed and awkward values before processing the full dataset. Record the expected behaviour for unsupported structures.
Convert locally
These tools operate in the browser without an upload, but device security still matters. Avoid shared devices and review extensions when material is sensitive.
Compare and preview
Check counts and representative values, then preview in the publication renderer. Automated comparison and visual inspection catch different classes of failure.
Publish with provenance
State the source, conversion date and important transformations when readers need to rely on the table. Correct the source or transformation rule rather than hand-editing repeated output inconsistently.
